About the event

Join us on Chester Street in Downtown Champaign as we kick off Juneteenth Week with the Harlem Renaissance Fashion Show and Clothing Drive, part of the expanded “For the Culture” summer series connected to The Beat. Hosted at Needful Things, this event celebrates the history, beauty, resilience, and creativity of Black culture through fashion, music, art, and community gathering.


The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s was one of the most influential and iconic cultural movements in American history. Centered in Harlem, New York, it was a time when Black writers, musicians, performers, designers, and artists used creativity as a form of pride, resistance, storytelling, and empowerment. It gave the world legendary voices in jazz, poetry, literature, dance, and fashion while creating spaces where Black identity could be celebrated boldly and unapologetically.
